What is the Subclass 189 Visa?

The Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residency visa for points-tested skilled workers. Unlike state-nominated or employer-sponsored visas, it does not require a sponsor. Once granted, it allows you to live, work, and study in any part of Australia without geographical restrictions.

This visa operates on an invitation-only basis through the Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect program.

Eligibility Thresholds

To be invited to apply, candidates must meet the core thresholds:

  • Age limit: Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation.
  • Occupation: Have an occupation listed on the relevant Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  • Skills Assessment: Hold a valid, positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation.
  • Points Test: Achieve a score of at least 65 points on the points test (though actual invitation thresholds are often much higher).
  • English Proficiency: Demonstrate at least Competent English (IELTS 6.0 or PTE 50). Higher scores grant points.

The SkillSelect Invitation Process

Applying for a subclass 189 visa is a multi-step process:

  1. Positive Skills Assessment & English test: Complete assessments before entering the queue.
  2. Expression of Interest (EOI): Submit a free EOI profile on SkillSelect indicating your points score and details.
  3. Wait in the Queue: EOIs remain valid for 2 years. Home Affairs runs periodic invitation rounds.
  4. Invitation to Apply (ITA): If selected, you receive an invitation and have exactly 60 days to submit a complete visa application.
  5. Visa Lodgement: Pay fees and upload all documents verifying the claims in your EOI.

⚠️ Invitation Realities (2025/2026)

While the minimum score to submit an EOI is 65, the subclass 189 queue is highly competitive. Actual invitation scores for many occupations (e.g. IT professionals, engineers) have frequently reached 90 to 95+ points. Healthcare and education roles often receive invites at lower points.
